“Sree Budha Charitham” is a Malayalam translation of the famous poetic narrative of Shree Budhan’s life story ‘Buddhacarita’ by the famous Sanskrit poet Ashva Gosha. ‘Buddhacharita’ in full means Buddhacarita-kavya-sutra. In Sanskrit language, it means, “Poetic Discourse on the Acts of the Buddha”.

The original book ‘Buddha-carita’ was written in Sanskrit and was published around the year 1893. The author of this ‘Buddhacarita was lived in the northern part of India in the 1st – 2nd century. History says the author Asvaghosha of this famous book was the spiritual advisor of great Buddhist emperor Kaniska. The book has 28 cantos or sections, out of which 14 are complete in Sanskrit and the rest are in incomplete form. But all the 28 sections are preserved in Chinese and Tibetan translations. The book tries to illustrate the early history of classical Sanskrit literature while depicting the life history of Sree Budha.
